Reviving, surviving and thriving

The streets of Castlebar are being revived over the coming days with the Heart of Castlebar Street Festival. The three day festival, which commenced yesterday (Thursday) offers plenty of local shopping promotions and super discounts in local stores. Free family fun and entertainment will fill the pedestrian friendly streets and the official launch will take place on Saturday at 12.30pm, at the junction of Main Street and Castle Street, by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny. Hopefully people will turn out and support this proactive festival, which will generate much needed money for the local economy.

Irish families spending on average €400 per child to go back to school

As parents of school going children brace themselves ahead of the back to school shopping season, the Irish League of Credit Unions has taken a look at just what the costs for both primary and secondary school children are. In 2011, a typical Irish family will spend approximately €400 on each child when getting them ready to go back to school in September with back-to-school expenditure for a second-level student is almost 50 per cent higher than for a primary-level pupil.

The participants in the Galway Rising of April 1916 anticipated their arrest and humiliation. During Easter Week, while the rebels were attacking police stations in parts of east Galway, and threatening an invasion of the town, the RIC was quick to round up all the usual suspects. They were easily recognised. Their public training, and their interruptions of recruitment meetings made them well known to the police. They were loaded into open-top vehicles and paraded ‘for the entertainment of the townsfolk’. Volunteer Frank Hardiman remembered being set upon and beaten by rowdies at a number of places, and pelted with mud by the town’s inhabitants.
